Abstract

The invention comprises an amine salt of a -2,4,5-trichlorophenoxypropionic acid of the formula <FORM:0731902/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 represents an alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, inclusive, and each R represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive. The salts are obtained by reacting a molecular proportion of the acid with at least one and preferably 2 to 20 molecular proportions of the amine R2R1N. The a -2,4,5-trichlorophenoxypropionic acid can be prepared by acidifying the corresponding sodium salt which results from the condensation of sodium a -chloropropionate with sodium 2,4,5-trichlorophenate. Examples describe the preparation by the above method of salts of a -2,4,5-trichlorophenoxypropionic acid with (1) dimethylamine, (2) methylamine, (3) isopropylamine, (4) di-isopropylamine, (5) trimethylamine and (6) secondary butylamine. Salts with diethylamine, di-isobutylamine, dibutylamine, n-propylamine, isobutylamine, tributylamine and triethylamine are also referred to. The products are useful in plant-growth regulating compositions.
