Abstract
731,833. Hollow rollers. KODAK, Ltd. July 10, 1953 [July 11, 1952], No. 17591/52. Class 34 (1). [Also in Group XVI] A roller, for maintaining a web of material in a predetermined lateral path, comprises a cylindrical member mounted for rotation about its axis on bearing means eccentrically mounted with respect to the roller axis on means permitting universal movement of both ends of the cylindrical member. As shown, a cylindrical member 1 forming part of a roller is rotatable about the inner races of ball races 2 having their outer races secured in recesses 3 at opposite ends of the roller. The inner races fit on bushes 5, each bush having a bore 8 disposed eccentrically with respect to the axis of the member 1. The bushes 5 are retained, against flanges 6, by locking-rings 7. Each bore 8 houses a self-aligning ball-bearing 9 clamped against a shoulder 10 by a ring 11 surrounding a stub-shaft 12 secured to the inner race of the bearing 9. If the force applied by the web is uniform along the length of the roller, the roller is rotated about the ball races 2. However, if one edge of the web is under greater tension than the other, the web applies a greater pressure at the corresponding end of the roller, thus causing the bush 5 at that end to rotate about the stub-shaft 12 to equalize the forces applied to the two roller ends by adjusting the inclination of the roller. The two stub-shafts 12 are parallel to, but offset from one another. In a modification, the bearing 2 may be replaced by a sleeve and/or the ball-bearings 9 by a pair of ball-bearings connected to the stub shafts by universal joints to permit tilting of the roller. Alternatively, the shafts 12 may be secured directly to the bushes 5 and be mounted in selfaligning bearings supported by a machine frame.
