Abstract

A composition comprises polythene and from 0.001 to 0.2 per cent of one or more alkyl aryl polyglycol ethers of formula R.O(CH2CH2O).xH wherein R is a benzene ring substituted at least once by an alkyl and/or cycloalkyl group having at least 3 carbon atoms and x is at least 2, preferably from 8 to 14, and free from substances which boil at or below 130 DEG C. The ethers may be prepared by reacting ethylene oxide with phenols such as dibutyl, octyl, isooctyl, dodecyl, t.-butyl, cyclohexyl, diamyl, t.-hexyl, di-t.-hexyl and nonyl phenols, and cresols such as t.-butyl-m-, di-t.-butyl-m-, di-t.-butyl-p- and iso-octyl cresols and may be purified by steam stripping. The compositions, which may be obtained from a master batch of polythene with a larger amount of ether, are suitable for extrusion at temperatures above 130 DEG C. to give films, sheets, coatings and filaments of improved slip.
