Abstract

731,554. Cyclone furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1953 [Feb. 15, 1952], No. 4339/53. Class 51 (1). A vortex furnace chamber is provided with a slag screen 19 disposed in the path of gases flowing to the gas outlet 21 from the chamber and comprising longitudinally-extending tubes grouped around the axis of the chamber. The tubes are arranged about a central gas outlet passage 20 co-axial with the furnace chamber and communicating at its end with the gas outlet. Pulverulent fuel is admitted tangentially through nozzle 30 and secondary air tangentially through nozzles 31 and 32. Further air is admitted through nozzle 33. In a modification, Fig. 3, the chamber is of substantially square cross-section, and the roof 50 is formed with a central square gas outlet 51 leading to a radiation chamber 52; the slag screen is formed by widely-spaced tubes 61; the chamber is corner-fired by burners 41 with which are associated secondary-air nozzles 42, 43, the arrangement being the same as that described in Specification 710,848.
