Abstract

730,421. Ventilating vehicles. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Feb. 23, 1953 [Feb. 23, 1952], No. 4978/53. Class 137. [Also in Group XIII] Relates to heating and ventilating systems for vehicles in which fresh air in passing to the vehicle space is heated by a heat exchanger 2 through which flow: a fluid heating medium such as the hot water of the en gine cooling system According to the in vention one portion of the air is heate( by that part of the heat exchanger a which the heating medium enters and is thereafter directed to one part of the vehicle space and another portion of the air is heated by that part of the heat exchanger at which the heating medium flows out and is thereafter directed to another part of the vehicle space. In the form shown the heat exchanger 2 is provided with inlet and outlet conduits 3, 4 respectively for the heating medium. The heated air is collected in a duct 5 which is provided with partition walls 6, 7 and a pivoted valve member 11 as shown. In the position indicated by full lines, the more highly heated air passing through the lower part of the heat exchanger flows beneath the wall 6 and valve member 11 to a duct outlet 13 leading to the lower part of the vehicle space, e.g. the foot space, whilst the air which receives less heat by flowing over the coolest part of the heat exchanger flows over the top of wall 6 and valve member 11 to an outlet 12 leading to the upper part of the vehicle space, e.g. the windscreen or side windows. On operation of the member 11 to the position indicated by chain lines, the wall 7 becomes effective and also the opening 13 is throttled by a part 10 of the valve member 11 so that the quantity of air passing to the lower part of the vehicle space is reduced, but becomes more highly heated due to its passage over a greater area of the heat exchanger surface. At the same time the quantity of air flowing to the outlet 12 is reduced due to the how reduced cross-section of that part duct through which it flows. It is stated that .temperature differences of 5 to 8 between the upper and lower parts of the vehicle space may be maintained and also that when the heat exchanger is disconnected draughts are avoided in the vehicle space by setting the valve to the position indicated by chain lines.
