Abstract
730,300. Articulated transporter carriages for use in mining and the like; endless conveyers. HEIDEMANN, W. Aug. 20, 1952 [Aug. 20, 1951], No. 20953/52. Classes 78 (1) and 78 (4). In an articulated vehicle formed with a longitudinallyextending conveyer and for use particularly in mines, the side walls 4 of the articulated sections are substantially vertical and the side walls and floors of adjacent sections overlap. The rail vehicle illustrated has an endless conveyer comprising plates 5, Figs. 5 and 9, carried by axles 7 having rollers 8 which run on guides 9 and are propelled by a chain 6. The unloading end of the conveyer is upwardly inclined as shown in Fig. 3, and its inclination is adjustable. Vertical extension plates 16 and 23 are provided at the loading and unloading ends of the vehicle. The motor 12 which drives the driving pulley 11 of the conveyer through gears 13 may be provided with power from the batteries of a locomotive 2 or may be operated by compressed air. Adjacent sections of the vehicle are joined by couplings 15 having vertical pivots 28, Fig. 6, and horizontal pivots 25. Each section may be provided with a single pair of wheels at one end, the other end of the section being supported by the adjacent section; auxiliary pairs of wheels are then secured as shown in Fig. 3 when the sections are to be separated and carried in a mine hoist. The lateral edges of the plates 5 of the conveyer may be upturned and may fold over the plates on the return run of the conveyer. A scraper conveyer or an endless belt, which may be troughed or be supplemented by side belts at the lower edges of the walls and may have protruding driving strips to engage the material, may be used in place of the plate conveyer or, as a further alternative, a double-ended belt wrapped on to and from drums at each end of the train may be employed. Driving chains disposed in the track may replace the locomotive 2. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 material hewn from a coal seam 18 by a coal-cutting machine 19 is delivered by a transportable conveyer 20 to loading-machines 3, 30 which deliver 'the material to the vehicle described above. When loaded the vehicle is driven along rails to a transverse track where it unloads into tubs. Holes 31, Figs. 3 and 6, in the side walls serve to receive stanchions for carrying rails or lengths of timber.
