Abstract

729,851. Tube Joints. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 23, 1953 [April 15, 1952], No. 7908/53. Class 99 (1). [Also in Group XXII] The flanged ends 32, 34 of metal tubes 20, 22, e.g. of aluminium and brass respectively, are pressed over a reinforcing tubular insert 24, and the abutting flanges are cold welded, i.e. the flanges are pressed together at a temperature substantially below that of normal welding. The insert has an external annular groove 26 to accommodate bulging at the joint, and may have an additional pair of grooves 28, 30 into which the walls of the tubes are rolled after removal from the press ; if rolled tightly into the grooves 28, 30, the insert 24 need not be a press fit. Tubular dies 36, 40 are located within a guide 52 between upper and lower members 44, 46 of the press. The die 36 has an annular projection 38 close to its inner periphery, for engaging the flange 32, and the die 40 has an annular projection 42 narrower than the projection 38 and further from. the inner periphery of the die, for engaging the thinner flange 34, the inner edge radius of each projection being greater than the outer edge radius.
