Abstract

a : b -Unsaturated ketones of the steroid series corresponding to the following partial formula (showing rings B and C) <FORM:0729595/IV (b)/1> are obtained by reacting a 7-keto-8 : 9-oxido steroid with zinc and a lower molecular aliphatic carboxylic acid with at most 5 carbon atoms, e.g. with zinc and glacial acetic acid. As starting steroid there may be used derivatives of cholestane, coprostane, sitostane, stigmastane, cholane, allocholane, spirostane, pregnane, androstane and aetiochloane. In an example D 22,23 - 3b - acetoxy - 7 - keto - 8 : 9-oxido-ergostene is utilized. D 22,23 - 3b - acetoxy - 7 - keto - 8,9 - oxidoergostene is obtained by treating D 7,8 : 22, 23-3b -acetoxy-ergostadiene with chromium trioxide in glacial acetic acid.
