Abstract
A process for producing a carbide layer on a core of refractory metal comprises applying a layer of a hydride of a second refractory material, firing to convert the hydride to a refractory coating, applying a layer of carbon onto the coating and firing to produce a carbide of the interface portions of the base and coating. The process is applicable to the production of a non-emissive electrode, in which case the carbide acts as a barrier layer onto which a non-emissive substance such as carbon or platinum may be applied. Suitable base metals are tantalum, columbrium, molybdenum, tungsten and their alloys; suitable hydrides are. those of zirconium, silicon and tantalum. Firing temperatures of 1400-2000 DEG C. are referred to, and the coating with hydride is preferably effected by cataphoresis. Specification 660,076 is referred to.
