Abstract

A cellular metal product is made by grinding in, or otherwise mixing, a gas-forming solid into molten metal and solidifying the resultant foam. The foam may be cast into a mould or generated therein. By using light metals, e.g. magnesium and aluminium, an apparent specific gravity of less than 1 can be obtained. Many gas-forming solids are disclosed, e.g. titanium and zinconium hydrides.
