Apparatus for helically lapping tape, thread, &c., 1, 2 on to an electric conductor, &c., 3 comprises a rotating frame 6 ... 9 carrying coils 12, 13 of tape, &c., the tapes, &c., 1, 2 being delivered from their coils by driving devices comprising rollers 18, 19, 20 about which the tape, &c., passes in a sinuous path, the rollers being driven by rotation of the frame and at a speed such that the tape, &c., is drawn from its coil faster than it is taken up on the travelling core 3 but can slip, as necessary with respect to the rollers, the tapes, &c., then passing through guides 32 against which an adjustable braking device, preferably comprising a spring-urged pad, applies a substantially constant tension to the tapes, &c., as they are lapped. The rollers 18, 19, 20, which are rubber-covered and furnished with intermeshing gears 24, are driven from a stationary sun wheel 45, with which meshes a planetary wheel 43 on the frame, a shaft 42 and gear box 22 the rollers being positioned between upper and lower plates 27, 29, the plate 27 being furnished with curved guides for the tape, &c.
