In an electric steam iron comprising a sole plate sub-assembly including a sole plate 10 carrying or affording a flash boiler 16 communicating with steam openings in the sole plate, a reservoir-valve sub-assembly including a reservoir 60 communicating with the boiler 16 to supply water to it, under the control of a valve 169, and a handle-cover-shell sub-assembly surmounting the reservoir and comprising a cover shell 100 and a handle 110, the reservoir-valve sub-assembly rests on the sole plate sub-assembly at a pressure contact joint 171, 143 situated near the toe of the iron and constituting the communication between the reservoir and boiler, and at one or more points towards the rear of the iron, and the handlecover-shell sub-assembly and reservoir-valve sub-assembly are held down on the sole plate sub-assembly by a single clamping means at an intermediate point. The clamping means may comprise a fixing bolt 104 passing through a tube 163 sealed to the top and bottom walls of the reservoir. The bolt 104 is concealed by a control dial 128 for a thermostatic switch (not shown). The dial 128 is resiliently held in place by one or more spring clips 124, and is connected to the thermostatic switch by means passing through a tube 165 sealed to the reservoir walls. The front handle pillar 112 is secured to the cover shell 100 by a stainless steel bracket 117 secured to the cover shell by screws 118. Clamped between the cover shell 100 and bracket 117 is a spring 185 having a pair of legs straddling the body of a filler tube 173. The spring 185 bears against shoulders on the side of the tube 173 to make good sealing engagement between the valve 169, an interposed gasket 172 and a part spherical seating 143 in a circular disc 141 secured to a boiler cover-plate 25. A bracket 147 supported at the rear of the sole plate 10 by means of a forwardly extending lug 148 has a lug 149 to which a closure plate 53 is attached. The bracket 147 has additional lugs 150 supporting the cover shell 100 and lugs 151 supporting the reservoir 60. The reservoir 60 is provided with baffles 181, 182. The filling tube 173, and a venting port 175 are as described in Specifica- 726,024. The valve operating mechanism 86, 87, 88 is as described in Specification 719,726.
