Abstract
<PICT:0725970/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0725970/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0725970/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0725970/IV (a)/4> A plurality of threads, particularly freshly formed artificial threads, are subjected in continuous manner to treatment with a liquid, such as a washing or desulphurizing liquid, while they are running in parallel but separated formation; they are guided along the underside of rollers, mounted at the extremities of a trough, at a distance of several millimetres, e.g. 3-7 mm., under the liquid level and over a plate at a distance of a few millimetres, e.g. 1-5 mm., from the plate; the liquid moving with the threads over the plate is bounded, at least over part of the plate, in such a way that the width of the liquid path is only a few millimetres, e.g. 6-14 mm., greater than the width of the path formed by the threads. By carrying out liquid treatment in this manner, back and cross current flow of the liquid is avoided and entanglement and rupture of individual filaments is reduced to a minimum. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a plurality of threads 6 are led along the lower sides of guide-rollers 4, 5 and guided through the treating-liquid 2. Steady flow of the liquid is promoted by the presence of plate 7 which is provided with guiding edges 8. The sides of the trough may also serve as bounding sides if the threads occupy the entire width of the trough to a distance of 3-7 mm. from either side. Preferably, the plate is placed in a slightly sloping position so that near the feed roller the distance between the plate and the threads is slightly more than at the delivery roller. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the plate 7 ends before the vertical tangential plane at the front end of the delivery roller, and in the arrangement shown in Fig. 6 the plate extends beyond the delivery roller but is there curved downwards, the curvature beginning at or before the line intersecting the vertical tangential plane at the front of the delivery roller. As shown in Figs. 4 and 6, a wave-trough is formed in the liquid below the delivery roller, the threads bridging over the wave-trough. Veils of liquid suspended from the threads above the wave-trough reduce the tendency of filaments to adhere to the roller and to float towards adjacent threads. As shown in Fig. 6, guide-blades 9 are provided at the end of plate 7 to guide the liquid along the underside of the plate and back to the feed-end of the trough. Similar blades may be provided near the feed roller. As shown in Fig. 2 the rollers 4, 5 are pivotally mounted so that they may be swung out of the bath when required for threading-in and cleaning operations. Temporary downward displacement of plate 7 is rendered possible by keeping the plate in position in the liquid-filled trough by means of floating bodies, e.g. the air chamber 14. In addition, tenons 15 on plate 7 slide in slots 16 (Fig. 1), in the sides of the trough and may revolve in them. Instead of the air chamber 14, other buoyant bodies, e.g. of cork, may be used, or instead of such bodies other lifting devices such as springs may be used. Protrusions 17 at the four corners of plate 7 rest on brackets attached to the bearings of the guide rollers and serve to keep plate 7 in proper position.
