In a simple gramophone, suitable for use in dolls and other toys, an operator's control moves the stylus from one part of the record groove to the start of the record groove and actuates the motor control. A turntable shaft 21 is supported by limbs 15a and 15b of a bracket 15, the lower limb 15b carrying an electric motor 18, the shaft 27 of which is pressed against the rim 24 of the turntable 16 on account of the resiliency of the limb 15b. The motor 18 is driven by a battery contained in a housing 14. The sound-box 19, which comprises a casing 30 and a radiating diaphragm 28 with stylus 29 attached directly thereto, is mounted on a resilient arm 32 on a shaft 31 which may be moved endwise by manual means against the tension of a spring 35 to lift the sound-box from the record. The spring 35 also acts rotationally when the sound-box has been lifted to automatically return it to a stop 37 representing the start of the record. A rigid arm 34 serves to hold the sound box out of contact with the record when the shaft 31 is lifted. The lifting means for the shaft 31 comprises a pivoted lever 41 and a push rod 40 having an end forming a push button 39. The movement of the soundbox to the starting position causes an arm 36 to establish an electric circuit through a contact 38 to drive the motor 18. When the stylus reaches the end of the record the contact between arm 36 and contact 38 is broken.
