Abstract
725,237. Silencers for gaseous currents. AIR-MAZE CORPORATION. June 30, 1953 [July 25, 1952], No. 18083/53. Class 7 (2). The housing of a silencer, e.g. an intake silencer, for absorbing sound waves having a frequency of 800 to 2,000 or more cycles per second, has in an end wall 11d a cylindrical outlet 10 coaxial with the semi-cylindrical top wall 11a of the housing, and a circular inlet 13 in the bottom wall 11c. The top and side walls 11a, 11b of the housing are covered with soundabsorbing material 15, such as felt or cotton, held in place by perforate or expanded metal 18 and an intermediate layer 20 of wire mesh, and there is a circular pad 16 of sound-absorbing material spaced from and disposed parallel to the wall 11d and supported by spacer bars 17. The pad 16 may be of the same construction as the covering on the walls of the housing. The generally annular area A between the pad 16 and the walls of the housing may be equal to the area of the inlet 13, and the annular area B between the periphery of the pad and the wall 11d may be approximately 150 per cent. of the area of the outlet C. A semi-toroidal ring 25 may surround the outlet opening 12 to improve the gaseous flow.
