Abstract
725,151. Covering cables. BORNAND, R. Jan. 13, 1953 [Dec. 1, 1952], No. 1004/53. Class 109. [Also in Groups XXII and XXVIII] In a machine for producing flexible tubing or electric cable coverings by helically winding strips of material 17 onto a sleeve 14a carried on a mandrel 14b and imparting to the tubing helical corrugations which run oppositely to the winding direction of the strips, the reels 9 for the strip material are disposed in a rotatable cage 2 situated upstream of the winding point 14 and on the winding axis of the machine. The reels 9 are arranged symmetrically with respect to the axis of rotation of the cage 2 such that the distance of the outermost portion of the rolls 10 of material from the axis of rotation is not greater than the radius of the rolls. A deflecting device, e.g. rollers 16, 18, associated with each roll 10 and rotating with the cage 2 serves to deflect the strips drawn from the rolls substantially tangentially to and substantially in the plane of the reels and to feed the strips to the winding point 14. As shown, the cage 2 comprises a horizontal cylinder 3 mounted in a bearing 6 and supported in a body 4 guided on rolls 7 and driven by a gear 20 engaging a gear 21 on a shaft 19 coupled to a motor ; alternatively, the cage may be journaled directly on a tool head 15. A cable 13 drawn from a reel 12 passes through a tube 8, supporting the reels 9, and the tool head 15 comprising corrugating and upsetting tools. Braking devices which permit independent adjustment of the tension of each individual strip during the stoppage and during operation of the machine may be provided. In modifications, (a) the cage 3 is frusto-conical and the reels 9 are disposed in planes parallel to the axis of the cage, and (b) the reels 9 are situated in planes inclined at an acute angle to the axis of the cage.
