Abstract
724,812. Springs. ROGOVY, M. March 11, 1953 [March 12, 1952], No. 6701/53. Class 108 (3). [Also in Group XIV] The stiffness of a spring unit can be varied by means of adjustable auxiliary springs. The unit comprises a series of rows of coil springs 3 within which are auxiliary coil springs 5, the top and bottom coils of which are coupled by rods 30 and cross-wires 31, 32 to crank-crafts 6. One crank-shaft extends along each row and each crank-shaft is supported by side frames 7 which in turn are supported by the coil springs 3. Sprockets 15 on the end of each crankshaft 6 are connected by a chain 46 so that rotation of the controlling knob 20 turns all the shafts. As each crank 25 is raised the inner spring 5 comes up to the level of the spring 3 and the unit becomes harder. As the crank is lowered, the springs 3 require to be compressed further before the springs 5 are brought into operation and so the unit is softer.
