Abstract

In the roasting of sulphide ores as a fluidized bed, the gas velocity above the bed is reduced so that it approaches the settling velocity of the particles and the temperature is so maintained <PICT:0724778/III/1> in the zone of reduced velocity that the fine particles agglomerate, thereupon falling down through the ascending gas stream. As shown in the figure, a fluidized bed 10 having an upper interface 9 and supported on grate 3 is fed with sulphide ore at 1. In the preferred embodiment a section 13 of slightly enlarged diameter surmounts the lower section 10 in order to steady the gas stream before it ascends to the zone of reduced velocity 11 where the cross section is still further enlarged. Gases leave at 7 and the roasted product is withdrawn at 8. The ratio of the cross sections may be 1.5 or more to 1.
