Abstract
Polyethylene films, e.g. sheet or tube, are irradiated with ultra-violet light from an artificial source of an intensity and for a sufficient time to improve their bonding properties to printing-ink. The irradiation may be effected by low-pressure mercury-vapour discharge tubes in quartz emitting light having a wavelength in the range 3200 \fa and 1800 \fa, in air, oxygen, nitrogen or carbon dioxide under normal, sub- or super-atmospheric pressure at a temperature within the range -40 DEG to 300 DEG C. Polythene of M.W. 12,000 to 24,000 as a film of thickness between 0.001 and 0.020 in. may be used, plasticized with, for example, polyisobutylene and including an antioxidant. In examples extruded film or tube, or film passing between a supply and take-up roll, is irradiated on one face by direct and on the other by transmitted radiation and shows increased bonding properties to printing-ink, used at room temperature, e.g. one comprising titanium dioxide, ethyl cellulose, a modified rosin esterified with pentaerythritol, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, industrial spirits and ethyl lactate.
