Abstract
Metal surfaces are treated to remove materials such as rust, scale or marine growths by coating them with an emulsifying agent in oil to form, in the presence of water, a viscous gel, and then reducing the viscosity of the gel by applying an oil-soluble thinner thereto. As applied to the flotation chambers of a dry dock, there is supplied on the surface of the water in the chamber an agent consisting of 4-6 parts by weight of an organic acid or fatty acid soap of an alkaline earth metal, 2-3 parts by weight of pine oil, and 90-100 parts by weight of a petroleum oil. A viscous gel is formed on the surfaces of the chamber over a period of days and by virtue of its swelling properties rust and scale are mechanically broken away from the surfaces. The addition to the chamber of a thinner consisting of 8-12 parts by weight of phenols and 90-110 parts by weight of petroleum oil, breaks the gel and allows it to flow over the surfaces, taking with it the rust or scale. A mixture of both agents may be used to prevent further rusting or scaling.
