Abstract

Class 38 (5) A rotary switch which may have a quick make and slow break and be operated by the control shaft of an associated variable resister, comprises a cam with a cam follower which is moved arcuately by a jaw on a control member which rotates about an axis displaced from the axis of the control shaft. The control member 58 has at one end jaws 64 engaged by a projection 16 on a lever 18 carried by the shaft 14 which is axially coincident with the casings 12, 20 of the switch and resister respectively, and at the other end jaws 62 which are angularly displaced from and shorter than jaws 64. Jaws 62 embrace the cam follower, a ball 56, so that rotation of shaft 14 turns member 58 and moves ball 54 with considerable mechanical advantage across cam surface 48 (Fig. 5). When the ball 56 is moved up a slope to central position 54 on the cam surface it moves a plate 42 which lifts without snap-action contacts 28, 30, which are mounted on springs 32, 34 from engagement with fixed contacts 22, 24. When ball 62 moves down a sloping surface to a cam surface recess 52, there is sufficient play for plate 42 to move sharply under the force of springs 32, 34 and the contacts close with a snap. Plate 42 is held in position by springs 66, 68 which engage it continuously. Specification 665,044 is referred to.
