Abstract

Bis - (2 - hydroxy - 3,5 - dimethylphenyl) methane is prepared by the reaction of 2,4-dimethylphenol with hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde or by boiling o-hydroxymesityl alcohol with dilute aqueous caustic soda solution and acidifying the reaction mixture. Salts may be prepared by reacting the bis-(2 - hydroxy - 3,5 - dimethylphenyl) methane with metal oxides, hydroxides, sulphides, chlorides or carbonates, or with organic bases such as amines and quaternary ammonium compounds. Salts mentioned are those of Ca, Ba, Mg, Sr, Sn, Co, Cd, Zn and Al.ALSO:The oxidation of solid or liquid oleaginous materials is inhibited by the addition of bis-(2-hydroxy-3, 5-dimethylphenyl) methane (substance A) or a salt thereof. Oleoginous materials mentioned are fatty oils and fats, petroleum oils (such as gasoline, jet fuels, transformer oils, turbine oils and mineral lubricating oils), waxes (such as slack wax, slop wax, paraffin wax, microcrystalline waxes, beeswax and carnauba wax) and synthetic lubricants (such as olefinic and oxyolefinic polymers and organic esters). Salts of substance A which may be employed are metal salts, particularly Ca, Ba, Mg, Sr, Sn, Co, Cd, Zn and Al salts, and organic base salts, particularly amine and quaternary ammonium salts. The oleaginous compositions may contain other additives such as blooming agents, pour point depressors, viscosity improvers, anti-foaming agents, detergents, corrosion inhibitors and anti-rusting compounds. The detergents may be metal, amine or quaternary ammonium salts of detergent-forming acids. Examples of such acids are fatty acids, talloil acids, rosin acids, woolfat acids, substituted fatty acids, aromatic acids, diphenols and sulphides and disulphides thereof, sulphonic acids, sulphuric acid mono-esters, esters of phosphoric and arsonic acids and corresponding thio-acids, and esters of antimony acids. Specific metal-containing detergents are the alkaline earth metal phosphate (or thiophosphate) diesters, the alkaline earth metal diphenolates (including the salts of diphenol mono- and poly-sulphides), calcium petroleum sulphonate and alkaline earth metal salts of alkylphenolaldehyde condensation products. Specific non-metallic detergents are phosphatides such as lecithin and cepholin, fatty oils such as rape seed oil and voltolized fatty or mineral oils. Corrosion inhibitors or anti-rusting compounds which may be employed are dicarboxylic acids of 16 or more more carbon atoms, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of sulphonic acids or fatty acids, organic compounds containing an acid radicle in close proximity to a nitrile, nitro or nitrose group (e.g. alpha-cyanostearic acid), glycidyl phenyl ether and paraffin wax disulphide. Additional ingredients are oil soluble urea or thiourea derivatives (e.g. urethanes, allophanates, carbazides and carbazones), isobutylene polymers and unsaturated polymerized esters of fatty acids and monohydric alcohols. Examples are given of the addition of substance A to white oil, mineral lubricating oil, lard oil and paraffin wax. For comparison purposes, the addition of 2,6-di-tert.-butyl-p-cresol bis-(2-hydroxy-3-tert.-butyl-5-methylphenyl) methane and dioctyl phenol to white oil or mineral lubricating oil, and the addition of 2, 6-di-tert.-butyl-p-cresol to lard oil or paraffin wax is described.ALSO:The oxidation of fats or fatty oils is inhibited by the addition of bis-(2-hydroxy-3, 5-dimethyl-phenyl) methane or a salt thereof. Salts which may be employed are metal salts, particularly Ca, Ba, Mg, Sr, Sn, Co, Cd, Zn and Al salts, and organic base salts, particularly amine and quarternary ammonium salts. In an example, bis-(2-hydroxy-3, 5-dimethylphenyl) methane is added to lard oil. For comparison purposes, the addition of 2, 6-ditert.-butyl-p-cresol to lard oil is described.
