Abstract

In the dyeing of loose wool with metallizable non-basic dyestuffs or non-basic dyestuffs containing metal in complex union, tippy dyeing is prevented by treating the wool before or during dyeing with a reaction product of at least 4 mols. of an a : b -alkylene oxide with 1 mol. of an organic compound containing a basic primary or secondary amino group, or containing a basic tertiary amino group and in addition an alcoholic hydroxyl group, or with a product obtained by introducing polyglycol ether chains having a corresponding number of ether groups into the said amines, or a salt or quaternary ammonium salt of the reaction product or the polyglycol ether product. Specified alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide, a : b -propylene oxide and glycide. Specified amines are methylamine, ethylamine, diethylamine, butylamine, hexylamine, dodecylamine, cetylamine, oleylamine and octadecylamine, polyamines such as ethylene diamine and triethylene tetramine, esters of hydroxy-amines with higher fatty acids such as the ester of triethanolamine with coconut oil fatty acid, partial amides of polyamines with fatty acids such as triethylene tetramine monoacylated with coconut oil fatty acid, aromatic amines of the benzene and naphthalene series having an alkyl side chain of, for example, 8-18 carbon atoms, and resin amines such as abietylamine, abietylmethylamine, hydrogenated abietylamine and the amine mixture corresponding to tall oil. The dyestuffs may be premetallized or aftermetallized with cobalt or chromium. Examples are given in one of which the dyestuff is afterchromed. A dry, concentrated dyestuff preparation may be p made by mixing and/or grinding the dyestuff and the condensation product, if desired with the addition of a diluent such as dextrin or urea.
