Abstract

722,488. Electric condensers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 14, 1952, No. 28762/52. Class 37. A capacitor electrode is manufactured by applying a coating of insulating material to a conductor, cutting slits in the conductor at intervals along its length, dissolving any exposed portions of conductor, and then cutting the conductor into separate sections by continuing the slits to the opposite edge. After coating the conductor with insulating material, the edges may be trimmed to expose the conductor. After dissolving the exposed conductor portions as shown in Fig. 1c, the conductor, bounded by edges 6, has overhanging portions 7 of the insulating layers. The slits are then continued by cutting along lines 8, so that the conductor is exposed level with the edge of the insulation in these portions. The separate electrodes may be stacked in alternate positions, as shown in Fig. 2, and the edges sprayed with conducting material to connect each series of points 10 and 11, to provide a stacked condenser. Uncoated metal electrodes may also be introduced between the coated electrodes, in the assembly. Before the electrodes are separated by cutting along lines 8, a further coating of insulation may be applied to fill the channelled edges. Fig. 3 shows an alternative construction in which this additional insulation 14 has been added, and a further conducting coating 17 has been added to each element, by vaporization, or by passing between coated rollers. The coatings 17 are connected together and form the other electrode of the condenser. The insulated coating may be cured or polymerized by heat treatment. Specifications 712,650 and 713,605 are referred to.
