Abstract

Polymers of molecular weight 10,000 to 60,000 are prepared by polymerizing acrylonitrile or mixtures containing at least 80 per cent acrylonitrile, in an aqueous suspension containing 2 to 50 per cent of the acrylonitrile of an aliphatic aldehyde, e.g. acetaldehyde and butyraldehyde, and an organic peroxide. The polymerization is preferably carried out at a temperature below 100 DEG C. and in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The copolymerizable monomers specified are vinyl acetate, methacrylic acid, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide and vinyl pyrrole. The catalyst may be acetyl, lauroyl or stearoyl peroxide. In an example the aqueous suspension also contains calcium nitrate, nitric acid and, as protective colloid, either gelatine or vinyl acetate maleic anhydride copolymer.
