Abstract

In a process for effecting ion exchange by passing a loading solution and a regenerating solution respectively through separate series of columns filled with an ion exchanger in which the residual loading or regenerating solution respectively is removed from a member of either group of columns before that column is switched over to the reverse operation, a number of columns to be washed is arranged as a group in series, wash water is supplied to one end of the group and a concentrated solution is withdrawn from the other end to be used in the respective loading or regenerating operation. Periodically the first column of the washing group is disconnected and transferred to the reverse operation; at the same time a column to be washed is coupled at the end of the washing group. For example in a system having eighteen columns six are employed for loading, six for regeneration, and a group of three columns is arranged as a washing group between the loading and regenerating group; similarly another washing group of three is arranged between the regenerating and the loading group so that each column before passing from one to the other of the loading and regenerating groups passes through the washing group. The invention is exemplified first by the production of potassium nitrate and calcium chloride from calcium nitrate and potassium chloride; calcium nitrate is employed as the loading solution at 90 DEG C. Before being regenerated, the first column of the loading group is passed to the washing group and wash water is passed therethrough. The liquid leaving the washing group is a concentrated solution of calcium nitrate which may be re-used for loading. Similarly after regeneration with potassium chloride at 20 DEG C. the columns pass in succession to a washing series from the end of which a concentrated solution of potassium chloride is withdrawn which may be used again for regeneration. The invention is further exemplified by the production of potassium nitrate and hydrochloric acid from nitric acid and calcium chloride nitric acid being the loading agent and potassium chloride the regenerant. On washing the spent ion exchangers in a group as before, a 30 per cent nitric acid solution is recovered and re-employed for loading. Specification 415,660 is referred to.
