Abstract

An aqueous solution for the cold permanent waving (or straightening) of hair comprises one or more alkali metal and/or ammonium sulphites and/or bisulphites and one or more water-soluble ethers and/or ether-esters which initially inhibit swelling of the cuticula of the hair, the solution having a pH value in the range of 6-7. Specified ethers or ether-esters are ethylene glycol monopropyl ether, diethylene glycol diethyl ether, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The solution may also contain an alcohol and one or more swelling-promoting substances, e.g. urea, thiourea, biuret, a water-soluble thiocyanate or dicyandiamide. Fixing is effected with aqueous hydrogen peroxide.
