Abstract

Electrically insulating coatings on wire are formed by applying to the wire a solution comprising a potentially reactive dibasic aciddihydric alcohol condensation product (the dibasic acid of which consists of more than 50 per cent of maleic acid), a substance containing the group CH2=C>, e.g. styrene, and a polymerization catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and baking at 200-400 DEG C. In preparing the resin, maleic anhydride may be partially replaced by o- or terephthalic, adipic or sebacic acid anhydrides, and as dihydric alcohols, ethylene or diethylene glycol, 1,4-butane diol, 1,6-hexane diol, and polyglycols may be used. a ,o -Hydroxylamines, e.g. monoethanolamine, or polyvinyl formal may replace up to 50 per cent of the alcohol and the resin respectively. Suitable solvents are cresylic acid or a cresylic acid-naphtha mixture. The catalyst should be present in sufficient amount to overcome any inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, which may be present.
