721,987. Removing insects from aircraft surfaces. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G. Oct. 14, 1953, [Dec. 3, 1952], No. 30619/52. Class 4. A mechanism for removing insects from the leading edge of an aircraft wing or other exposed surface comprises, in the embodiment described, a carriage 11 provided with rollers 20 to engage in tracks 22,23 on a member 24 mounted spanwise within the leading edge 10 of a wing. An endless chain 25, mounted on sprockets 26, carries a peg 27 to engage in a slot 28 on the carrier 11, one sprocket being driven by an electric motor. Permanent, or as shown, electromagnets 12, 13, supplied with current from a bus-bar 30, are secured to the ends of the carrier 12, the polepieces 12a,13a being in close proximity to the inner surface of the wing plating to co-act with a pair of armatures 34 formed with rollers 36 for spanwise movement on the outer surface of the plating. A spring tensioned wire 35 or a chain made from "Tufnol" (Registered Trade Mark) or other non-ferrous material, connects the armatures 34 for scraping insects from the leading edge plating during the take-off of the aircraft. Water or other lubricant may be applied to the surface to be scraped, and the scraper element may be parked alongside a boundary layer fence or apertures therefor may be provided in the fuselage wall.
