[Also in Group VII] Buttons, attaching.-In a device for feeding buttons with sewing holes to a presser-foot by means of tilting lever members having means for engaging the holes for orientating and transporting the buttons by sliding movement along a guide shoot between a source of supply and the presser-foot, slide-limiting means effective on the buttons independently of the movement of the orientating and transporting means are provided, so that the positioning of the buttons is not liable to be affected by momentum effects in high-speed operation. The apparatus described is substantially the same, except as indicated below, as that of Specification 701,586, in which the presser-foot 26 is rigid with the end of the shoot 25 and means for lifting the foot and the shoot simultaneously moves downwards a carriage sliding on the shoot, the carriage having mounted thereon tilting levers 42, 47; the first lever has a pin 38 for engaging a hole of a button and moves between guiding plates 27, 28 to draw the button downward and position it with the hole substantially on the axis of the shoot, and the second lever has two pins 92 to engage two holes of the button on the next actuation of the parts and carry the button to the sewing point while maintaining it in the correct orientated position for subsequent passage of the needle through its holes. In the present apparatus free movement of the button down the shoot, before engagement by the lever 42, is limited by a member 67 pivotably mounted at 69 on a bracket 73 on the presser-foot and biased by a spring 76 mounted on a pin 77 on the bracket. When positively moved by the lever 42, the button forces up the member 67 and passes under a pressure member 72 on an arm also pivoted at 69 and biased by a spring 80 on the pin 77 to hold the button until it is engaged by the lever 47 and moved to the sewing position, where it is again held by an arm 102 pivoted on a block 103 on the presser-foot and biased by a spring 107. The downward movement of the carriage relative to the shoot and foot is limited by engagement of an abutment on the bracket 73 on the foot with a pin 89 on the lever 47, which is slotted at its pivot to allow limited movement of the carriage before it is stopped.
