Abstract
721,106. Automatic frequency control systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 14, 1953 [May 17, 1952], No. 13524/53. Class 38 (4). The search voltage source, used for extending the catching range of a frequency stabilization system as in Specification 684,217, is constituted by a reciprocally-coupled valve pair comprising the frequency-regulating reactance tube and an auxiliary amplifier tube. As shown, the controlled oscillator comprises a heptode tube 2 with back-coupling to a tuned circuit 4, and its output is mixed with that of a reference source 11, which may be a pulse or a sine-wave source, in a phase-comparer 12. The comparer output is integrated at 13 and passed through a low-pass filter 14 to the control grid of a reactance tube 7 which is connected across the tuned circuit 4 to correct its frequency to that of the reference source 11, or to an harmonic thereof. If the frequency error is too large, the oscillator fails to lock-in, and the search voltage generator comes into operation. This comprises the reactance tube 7 and an auxiliary triode amplifier 15, reciprocally coupled. The anode of the reactance tube is connected to the grid of the amplifier 15 through a network comprising as a series member a series combination of resistor 17 and condenser 18, and as a shunt member, parallel-connected resistor 19 and condenser 20. The anode of the amplifier 15 is directly connected to the screen grid of the reactance tube 7 both of which are earthed for the oscillator frequency by a condenser 23 shunting the resistor 22. The valve pair 7, 15 oscillates at a low frequency determined by the constants of the inter-valve network, and the effective reactance of the tube 7 is thus swept through a range wide enough to ensure locking of the oscillator to the frequency source 11. As soon as locking occurs, the negative feed-back round the AFC loop renders the search voltage generator inoperative. A high-frequency choke 16, and the condenser 21, prevent the H.F. oscillations from entering the RC network 17 ... 20. The triode 15 and the heptode 2 may be in a common envelope, with the triode grid connected to an intermediate grid of the heptode.
