Abstract
Polymethine dyes are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula <FORM:0720556/IV (c)/1> with a cyanine dyestuff intermediate of the general formula <FORM:0720556/IV (c)/2> wherein R2 is aryl, styryl, alkylmercapto or aralkylmercapto; R3 is alkyl; X is O or S; X1 is an anion; Y is a reactive group or atom such as alkyl mercapto, acetanilido or halogen; Z1 is the residue of a heterocyclic nucleus; and n is 0 or 1. Suitable compounds of the first general formula include 4-isopropylidene-2-phenyl-5-oxazolone and 4-isopropylidene-2-styryl-5-oxazolone. 4-(2-Phenyl-5-oxazolone)-21 - (3 - ethylthiazoline) - a - methyltetramethinemerocyanine is prepared by refluxing together 4 - iso - propylidene - 2 - phenyl - 5 - oxazolone, 2 - o - acetanilidovinylthiazoline ethiodide, ethanol, and triethylamine. 4-(2-Phenyl-5-oxazolone) - 21 - (1 : 3 : 3 - trimethylindoline)-a - methyltetramethinemerocyanine, 4 - (2-styryl - 5 - oxazolone) - 21 - (3 - ethylbenzthiazole)-a - methyltetramethinemerocyanine, 4 - (2-ethylmercapto - 5 - thiazolone) - 21 - (3 - ethylbenzthiazole) - a - methyldimethinemerocyanine, 4 - (2 - benzylmercapto - 5 - thiazolone) - 21 - (3-ethylbenzthiazole) - a - methyldimethinemerocyanine, 4 - (2 - ethylmercapto - 5 - thiazolone) - 21-(1 : 3 : 3 - trimethylindolenine) - a - methyltetramethinemerocyanine, 4 - (2 - phenyl - 5-oxazolone) - 21 - (3 - ethylbenzthiazole) - a -methyldimethinemerocyanine, and 4 - (2 - styryl-5 - oxazolone) - 21 - (3 - ethylbenzthiazole) - a -methyldimethinemerocyanine are similarly prepared. According to the Provisional Specification, the dyes may have the general formula <FORM:0720556/IV (c)/3> wherein R is H, alkyl, or aralkyl, R1 is H, alkyl, aralkyl, or aryl, R2 is alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, styryl, hydroxy, alkoxy, aralkoxy, mercapto, alkylmercapto, or aralkylmercapto, n is O or a small positive integer, R4 and R5 are the same or different and are hydrogen or alkyl, and m is 0 or 1.ALSO:4 - Isopropylidene - 2 - styryl - 5 - oxazolone is prepared by refluxing together cinnamoyl glycine, acetic anhydride, fused sodium acetate and acetone.
