Abstract
Acrylonitrile polymerization products, such as filaments and films, are dyed in the presence of a dyeing assistant comprising a carbon-containing compound having all its carbon in aliphatic, araliphatic, and/or heterocyclic groupings and containing at least one radical represented by the formula -NRR1, in which R and R1 are hydrogen or aliphatic radicals or when taken together with the nitrogen atom represent a heterocyclic radical. The assistant may be applied to the products during or after dyeing. Particularly suitable, dyes are the vat, acid, direct and Naphthol dyes, but the use of acetate, sulphur and metallized dyes also is referred to. The acrylonitile polymerization product may be dyed in a gel state such as is obtained in the process of Specifications 672,775, [Group IV(a)], 673,738 and 695,448, [Group IV(a)]. The acrylonitrile may be polymerized alone or together with other compounds containing the vinyl group, many of which are specified. Suitable dyeing assistants are alkanolamines, polyalkylenepolyamines, aliphatic hydrocarbon substituted amines, and guanido and guanyl compounds. The amino groups of polyamines may be connected by an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a divalent hydrocarbon radical containing at least one ether linkage, a divalent triazine radical, a divalent pyrimidine radical, or a divalent triazole radical. Many suitable dyeing assistants are specified. In Examples, (1) to (3) polyacrylonitrile fibres are dyed with Vat Jade Green (C.1. No. 1101) vatted with sodium hydrosulphite in the presence of diethylene-triamine, b -diethylaminopropylamine or di-sec.-hexylamine; (4) dibutyl phthalate is added to the dyebath used in (1); (5) the first example is repeated on a fibre of copolymerized acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride; (6), (5) is repeated but using 6, 61-dichloro, 4, 41-dimethyl-2.21-bis-thionaphthene indigo as the dyestuff; (7) the fibre of (1) is replaced by acrylonitrile-vinyl chloride copolymer, and diethylaminoethanol is used as the dyeing assistant; (8), (7) is repeated on a polyacrylonitrile fibre in the presence also of p-nitrophenol; (9) mixed fibres of polyacrylonitrile and copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate are dyed with Vat Jade Green vatted in the presence of ethylenediamine and b -oxynaphthoic acid; (10) the fibres of (9) are dyed with Vat Jade Green vatted in the presence of ethylenediamine; (11), (10) is repeated in the presence of potassium carbonate; (12) fibres of the copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate are dyed with Dark Blue BO (C.1. No. 1099) vatted in the presence of ethylenediamine; (13) fibres as in (12) are treated with Naphthol AASW dissolved in ethylenediamine and the colour developed with diazotized dianisidine; (14), (1) is repeated on fibres in the gel state obtained as in Specification 673,738; (15) fibres as in (9) are treated in an acid leuco vat of Vat Jade Green, then treated with a solution containing sodium hydrosulphite and ethylenediamine and finally the colour is developed by oxidation with acid dichromate; (16) (17) and (18) the assistant of (15) is replaced by triethanolamine, triethylenetetramine or morpholine.
