718,834. Fluid-pressure brakes. WALKER BROS. (WIGAN), Ltd. April 14, 1953 [May 21, 1952], No. 12809/52. Class 103(1) In a servo-braking system for vehicles of the type wherein the handbrake lever 5 acts by mechanical means only upon the rear wheel brakes and its ratchet mechanism is used to lock the brakes for parking purposes, the parking brakes for the vehicle are made more effective by arranging for an isolating valve 16 between the fluid pressure servo-device 11 and the brake cylinders on either the front wheels or on all the wheels, to be shut by the initial movement of the handlever. As shown the isolating valve 16 is of rotary type and is linked to handlever 5 by an arm 18 connected to crank 21 by a slot 20 so shaped that the flow port 17 is quickly shut off by the first movement of the handlever, subsequent movement of which does not move the valve through a substantial angle. For full effective braking during parking the brakes are thus pressurized by the pedal 8, this pressure being maintained by actuation of the hand lever 5. A non-return valve 25, by-passing the isolating valve 16 enables the brake pressure to be increased if necessary without opening the isolating valve 16. In another arrangement described the isolating valve is of piston type operated by a pair of solenoids energized by operation of a two-way switch controlled by a press button on the hand lever.
