Abstract
718,786. Blowpipe burners. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Jan. 5, 1953, [Jan. 11, 1952.] No. 234/53. Class 75 (1). [Also in Group XXII] In a method of treating molten metal in a mould to reduce piping, an oxy-fuelgas flame is directed against the top surface of the metal from a burner nozzle 21 having drilled ports 33, and the velocity of the combustible mixture is so corelated with the volume ratio of oxygen to fuel gas therein and with the distance between the nozzle and the top surface of the metal that the flame starts at a distance from the face of the nozzle. Preferably the gas mixture flows at a discharge velocity between 60 and 300 metres per second, and the volume ratio of oxygen to fuel gas is between 1.3 and 1.8 to 1 when the fuel gas is natural gas and between 0.4 and 1.1 to 1 when it is coal gas. The nozzle is then positioned between 6 and 31 cms. from the top surface of the metal.
