Abstract
718,411. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus; pipe joints. JOHNSON CO., C. S. Feb. 21, 1950 [Feb. 26, 1949], No. 4469/50. Classes 8 (2) and 99 (1). [Also in Group XXX] In a concrete bucket of the bottom dumping type (see Group XXX) at least one discharge gate is opened by movement of a piston and cylinder actuator operated by a source of compressed air, and control means for the actuator includes a reservoir of compressed air selfcontained within the bucket structure, and means operated as an incident to decrease in pressure either at said source or at a detachable connection to said source, for supplying air from the reservoir to said actuator to reverse its former movement and thereby close the gate. Air from a supply pipe 151 is fed to the front or rear of a pair of such actuators 50, 50a according to the position of a valve 150. Valve 150 is operated against the pressure of a spring 153 normally holding it in lowered position by means of a piston 152 operating in a small cylinder supplied by a pipe 154. When an air lance 140 is inserted in either of two sockets 135, 136, air passes to a control device 160, Fig. 7. A ball 170 is caused by the inlet of air to close the pipe leading to the socket not in use. Air is then simultaneously supplied to the pipe 154 and via a spring-loaded ball 175 to a reservoir 161 and to the pipe 151. Valve 150 is thus moved into its upper position and as reservoir 161 is charged, air from pipe 151 enters the front ends of the actuator 50, 50a, to open the gates of the concrete bucket. Upon removing the air lance 140, valve 150 drops to the lower position while air is still supplied through pipe 151 by the reservoir 161. This air passes to the rear of the actuators 50, 50a thus closing the bucket gates. Pipe joints.-Each of the sockets 135, 136 consists of a conical aperture 184 and a flexible lip 182 arranged to give self-sealing of the lance 140 which can be inserted at any angle within the conical aperture.
