Class 144(1) Flanged railway wheels have at least the tread portion composed of sound preventing and deadening material from one of the following: a metal powder agglomerated under high pressure; a sintered metal such as iron; a shock resistant glass; or a synthetic resin with or without incorporated textile fibre or metal powder reinforcement. With a cellular material a sound deadening material such as rubber may be forced into the cells by pressure or by evacuation of the cells. Fig. 1 shows the entire flanged rim 2 as made of the sound preventing and deadening material and shrunk on the wheel body 4, a resilient securing ring 3 being also provided. The wheel itself may be made of the sound preventing and deadening material and have a removable flanged rim of the same material. Fig. 5 shows a wheel with only the tread formed to prevent and deaden sound, the flange integral with the wheel being of metal. In this form the tread consists of bounded concentric layers of sound preventing and deadening material 11 and intervening layers of a material 12 such as rubber having a higher sound deadening quality. The tread is retained by a ring 8 secured to the wheel by bolts 9. The tread may be applied to resilient wheels such as that described in Specification 642,815.
