Abstract

<PICT:0717908/III/1> Apparatus for applying ink to an edge portion of a shoe bottom member comprises a handle device having a valve to control flow of ink through the device and being adapted to support a brush, a flexible tube leading to the handle device, means for feeding ink under pressure through the tube from a container thereof, and a power-operated stirrer for stirring the ink in the container. As illustrated, a disc-shaped lid 11 adapted to fit over the mouth of a cylindrical ink container 17 supports an electric motor 29 by means of an L-shaped bracket 19, the motor driving a shaft 31 which passes through a sleeve 27 which is threaded through bores 21, 23 in the bracket and lid. Near its lower end the shaft 31 carries a rotary stirrer 76 and a gear 35 which meshes with a gear 37 freely mounted for rotation in a casing 39. The assembly of gears 35 and 37 and the casing 39 forms a gear pump of which the outlet pipe 49 leads to a connection 51 having a bore passing through the lid 11 and fitted with a flexible tube 53 leading to a nozzle 55, a return pipe 69 leading through a needle valve 73, controlled by a screw 75, to a bore 71 in the lid 11. The nozzle 55 has a bore leading to a valve 59, adapted to be opened by pressure of the operator's thumb. From the valve a small bore leads to a cavity 65 adapted to support an exchangeable brush 67, on which a guide 81 is mounted. Instead of a gear pump, an electric diaphragm pump or an archimedian screw may be used. The pipe 49 may be connected to the bore 71 of the valve 73, the bore in the connection 51 being closed, or the valve 73 may be closed, and an adjustable valve incorporated in the nozzle 59.
