Abstract
716,592. Centrifugal machines. MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR KOLENBEWERKING STAMICARBON N.V. Oct. 17 1952 [Oct. 17, 1951; Sept. 26, 1952], No. 26068/52. Class 23 [Also in Groups VI, XVII and XIX] Apparatus for dividing a liquid flow into different parts in accordance with viscosity comprises a chamber in which a vortex of the liquid is formed, an outlet from the chamber discharging the liquid as a conical sheet having an apex angle depending on the viscosity, and at least one collector co-axial with the outlet from the chamber. The apparatus may be used to divide a liquid flow in accordance with other properties, such as density, which alter with viscosity. As shown in Fig. 4, the liquid. is supplied to the chamber 21 by a tangential pipe 22 and is discharged through the outlet 26. Collectors 27, 29, 33 coaxial with the chamber are connected to conduits 28, 31, 35, the arrangement being such that the conduits discharge liquid of successively higher viscosity. Screw fittings 25b, 36, 37 permit control of the diameter of the outlet and the heights of the upper edges of the collectors 29, 33 so that the conduits may discharge different viscosities. The supply of liquid to the chamber may also be' varied so that the conduits discharge different viscosities. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the chamber 1a has a core 9 which may be rotary, and the distance of the chamber from the collectors 4a, 6a may be varied. In the suspension thickening plant shown in Fig. 5, multi-hydro-cyclones 43, 44, 45 in series are supplied with suspension from a pipe 40. Thickened suspension from the cyclone 43 passes through the chamber 47 so that if of the required density it is discharged by the conduit 48 but if below the required density it is returned by the conduit 49 to the cyclone 43. The denser discharges from the cyclones 44. 45 are also returned to the cyclone 43. Dimensions and performance figures for the apparatus are given in the Specification.
