Abstract

A lubricating composition for metal working comprises a major proportion of water and minor proportions of a nitrate, a buffering agent and a water-soluble or water-dispersible non-ionic surface-active agent of formula R-(XR1)y-XXR11 wherein R and R11 each represents a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group or an acyl radicle, R1 represents an alkylene group, X represents oxygen, sulphur, selenium or tellurium, and y is an integer greater than 1, the grouping XR1 being the same or different on each occasion on which it occurs in the molecule. The nitrite may be a metal nitrate or a nitrite of an organic base, particularly of an organic nitrogen base. The buffering agent may be an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal acetate, citrate, tartrate, phosphate, tripolyphosphate or molybdate. Minor proportions of anti-foaming agents, masking agents for masking objectionable odours, and/or perfuming agents may be present in the composition. Examples of anti-foaming agents are silicones (e.g. dimethyl silicone polymer), organic phosphates (e.g. tributyl phosphate) and polyglycidyl isopropyl ether. Examples of masking agents are low molecular weight aldehydes (e.g. acetaldehyde), oil of pines and oil of mirbane. The composition may be emulsified with oil and in this case an emulsifier may be present. Suitable emulsifiers are oil-soluble salts of petroleum sulphonic acids, alkali metal soaps of fatty acids, of rosin acids or of naphthenic acids, alkali metal salts of sulphated alcohols, and alkali metal salts of mono- and poly-alkyl esters of sulpho-dicarboxylic acids. A large number of examples are given wherein the nitrite is sodium nitrite, lithium nitrite or dicyclohexylammonium nitrite; the buffering agent is disodium hydrogen phosphate, trisodium phosphate, potassium tripolyphosphate, borax or sodium molybdate; the non-ionic surface active agent is "Pluronic F68", "Pluronic L64", "Ucon 50-HB-1000" ("Ucon" is a Registered Trade Mark), "Ucon 50-HB-660", reaction product of polyoxypropylene glycol with ethylene oxide, monobutyl ether of reaction product of polyoxypropylene glycol with ethylene oxide, water-soluble polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene glycol, water-soluble copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide or the monopropyl or monolauryl ether of such a copolymer; and other ingredients present in some cases are silicones, tributyl phosphate, polyglycidyl isopropyl ether, mineral oil and sodium petroleum sulphonate. Tests are described in which the lubricating compositions of the invention are compared with compositions consisting of (a) n-butanol, sodium nitrite, trisodium phosphate, potassium ricinoleate and water, (b) water, "Antarox A-400" ("Antarox" is a Registered Trade Mark) and disodium hydrogen phosphate, with or without sodium mercaptobenzthiazole, thiourea or lauryl pyridinium chloride, (c) water, "Antarox A-400", and sodium nitrite, with or without thiourea, and (d) water, "Antarox A-400" and borax.
