Abstract
716,319. Time switches. MIDGLEY, A. H. May 29, 1952 [June 19, 1951], No. 14487/51. Class 38(5) A time-delay mechanism for a switch comprises a cam 3 mounted on a brass cup 2 and having a pin 4 movable in a slot 1a in a fixed plate 1b. The pin 4 is connected by a spring 10 to a pin 7a in a member 7 mounted on a shaft 6 also carrying an operating arm 8 connected to switch contacts. One arm of a bell-crank lever 12 pivoted at 11 engages the cam, the other arm having a pin 15 in an inclined slot 14b in a member 14 having a slot 14a engaging pivot 11. Member 14 is urged upwards and to the left by a spring 17 and has a latch portion 14c co-operable with a lug 9 on member 7. When arm 8 is moved counter-clockwise, the cam 3 is rotated in the same direction by the engagement of lug 9 with a step 3a on the cam until pin 4 engages the end of slot 1a as shown. This pin is connected to a gear train 19, 27 including a ratchet-and-pawl drive which slips during this movement. Reverse movement of arm 8 rotates the lug 9 clockwise until it is latched beneath portion 14c, thus straining spring 10. The cam 3 is prevented from rotation until a brake 28 operable by a plunger 31 is released, the gear train then 'allowing the cam to turn slowly clockwise. When lever 12 drops down step 3b on the cam, the member 14 is tilted clockwise to release lug 9 and member 7 which are rapidly returned clockwise by spring 10 to rotate the arm 8 and actuate the switch.
