Class 138 (2) In a washing machine having a container D which is generally rectangular in plan and has a wringer A extending across its rear top portion, a lid R is arranged to slide from a position where it is under the wringer to a position in which it covers the part of the container not covered by the wringer: A pump P2 for emptying the container and an impeller P1 are driven by the same motor P and splashing caused by the impeller when the container is partly emptied, is confined within the container by placing the lid R in the position shown in Fig. 2. One end of an outlet hose Q is fitted over a stationary bung, Fig. 1 (not shown), during washing and the pump P2 turns idly, as described in Specification 701,977. Alternatively the impeller may be stopped by a clutch during emptying. The lid R has a flange R1 sliding on shoulders D1 of the container D, and rubber pads R2 prevent rattling or scratching. The lid R has a hand hole R3 and is fluted to serve as a scrubbing board. The wringer A is pivoted at F and can be inverted when not in use, being locked in either position by a latch, Fig. 1 (not shown). A further flanged lid adapted to cover the whole machine, Fig. 3 (not shown), can be inverted and used as a work tray with one edge hooked under part of the wringer.
