Abstract

715,932. Absorbent paper made from synthetic filaments. DEXTER & SONS, Inc., C. H. Sept. 23, 1952, No. 23849/52. Class 96 Unbeaten filaments of viscose, acetate rayon, ethyl or benzyl cellulose, vinyl chloride or vinyl acetate or copolymers thereof, styrene polymers, polyamides, e.g. nylon, or of casein, or soya bean proteinaceous material, at least 6 mm. long, and 1¢ to 5 denier are formed into a dilute suspension, e.g. of 0.01 to 0.02 per cent consistency, to which is added 4 to 20 per cent. of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, on the filament weight, the water-soluble part of which disperses and deflocculates the filaments, and part, as a gel, adheres to the filaments at their intersection points when they are felted to form a soft, highly absorbent, porous web of 50 grains to ¢ lb. weight per square yard. The sodium carboxymethyl cellulose may be added dry at the beater, and mixed in with the roll raised; it may have a substitution value of 0.3 to 0.75, and may be such that 2 to 25 per cent. of gel particles are retained by a screen of 105, 625 meshes per square inch. The filaments of the web may be disposed longitudinally, transversely, or at random, by adjustment of the speed of the machine. A heatsealable product may be made by floating vinylacetate-vinyl chloride filaments at the top of the dispersion in the head-box so that they appear at the upper surface of the web. The product may be given wet strength by passing it through viscose. Specifications 449,118 and 621,823 are referred to.
