Abstract
715,794. Discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 10, 1952 [Oct. 13, 1951], No. 25430/52. Class. 39(1) An electric discharge tube is provided with an indirectly heated cathode comprising a filament body housed in an insulating cylinder which engages the cathode sleeve only at a few points, the cathode being characterized in that near each end the cathode sleeve has indentations which hold the insulating cylinders spaced apart from the cathode sleeve, whilst at the area of these indentations the filament body does not engage the inner side of the insulating cylinder. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the insulating cylinder 5 is supported by indentation 4 at the top and bottom of the cathode sleeve 3. The helical heater 6 does not extend so far as the top indentations 4 and at the bottom end has straight limbs in the vicinity of the lower indentation 4 so that it does not contact the insulating cylinder 5 in this region. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the V-shaped filament is coated with insulation except at the parts which lie near the lower indentation 8. With the improved electrical insulation thus provided between the filament and cathode the tube may be operated with 6000 volts difference between filament and cathode. The cathode may have a diameter of 3 mm., the spacing between the cathode and the insulating cylinder may be 0.1 to 0.2 mm., and the insulating cylinder may have a wall thickness of 0.38 mm.; the insulating cylinder is preferably of magnesia but may be of quartz or ceramic material.
