Abstract
Insecticidal substances are obtained from ants having anal glands, in particular from ants of the sub-family Dolichoderin , such as Tiometopurn microcephalum Panz., Tapinoma nigerrimum Nyl., and Iridomyrmex humilis Mayr. In particular an allegedly new chemical compound iridomyrmecin may be obtained, having the formula C10H16O2 and the following properties: m.p., 60-61 DEG C.; softening point, 58-59 DEG C.; rotatory power <FORM:0715546/IV (b)/1> , +210 DEG ; refractive index <FORM:0715546/IV (b)/2> , 1.4607; and the chemical characteristics of a bicyclic lactone. Iridomyrmecin may be converted into an isomeric insecticidal substance of m.p. 55 DEG C. and <FORM:0715546/IV (b)/3> - 52.5 DEG by treating with methyl alcoholic potash followed by acidification. The substances may be extracted by grinding the insects with an insecticidal carrier such as chalk and subjecting the resulting powder either to sublimation or distillation or to extraction with solvents, e.g. ether, followed by crystallization and/or sublimation or distillation.ALSO:Insecticidal substances are obtained from ants having anal glands, in particular from ants of the sub-family Dolichoderinae, such as Tiometopum microcephalum Panz., Tapinoma nigerrimum Nyl., and Iridomyrmex humilis Mayr. In particular an allegedly new chemical compound iridomyrmecin may be obtained, having the formula C10H16O2 and the following properties: m.p., 60-61 DEG C; softening point, 58-59 DEG C; rotatory power <FORM:0715546/VI/1> , + 210 DEG ; refractive index <FORM:0715546/VI/2> , 1.4607; and the chemical characteristics of a bicyclic lactone. Iridomyrmecin may be converted into an isomeric insecticidal substance of m.p. 55 DEG C and <FORM:0715546/VI/3> -52.5 DEG by treating with methyl alcoholic potash followed by acidification. An insecticidal powder may be obtained by grinding the insects with a carrier such as chalk. Fractions of increased insecticidal activity including iridomyrmecin itself may be obtained from said powder by subjecting the powder either to sublimation or distillation or to extraction with solvents, e.g. ether, followed by crystallization and/or sublimation or distillation. The insecticidal substances of the invention may be used individually or mixed with one another or with other active insecticidal substances optionally in admixture with wetting agents and diluents.
