715,523. Hedge and like cutters. McCONNEL, Ltd., F. W. Jan. 16, 1952 [Jan. 19, 1951], No. 1461/51. Classes 6 (2) and 6 (3)] A hedge or like growth cutter comprising a power-actuated toothed cutting-element is supported from a tractor, trailer, or like vehicle or a boat, by means of relatively-movable members adapted to permit relative movement between the cutter and support if an obstruction is met while maintaining the drive and keeping the cutter parallel to the adjacent surface of the hedge. The cutter, comprising a toothed finger bar 12 and reciprocating cutter bar 11, is carried between the two arms of a bracket 25 of a link 19, and is adjustable about a shaft 24 to vary the cutting- angle. The shaft 24, which drives the eccentric controlling the reciprocation of the bar 11, is driven from a motor 14 mounted on a platform 13, on which is also secured the arm 16 of a parallel-motion linkage 16 ... 19. The link 18 is formed in two parts 41 connected by a sleeve 42 containing a spring 43, so that when the cutter meets an obstruction such as a thicker part of the hedge, it can give and then, when the obstruction has been: overcome, be restored to its normal position. The position of the cutter relative to the platform 13 can be adjusted by means of a double-acting piston 37 acting through a lever 36; the cylinder 38 being connected by pipes 40 to the hydraulic system of the tractor. The platform is mounted on the tractor by parallel-motion Hnkage 32, 35, so that it is maintained in a horizontal position.
