Abstract
Olefin-piperylene copolymers are prepared by cooling to below -75 DEG C. a mixture containing an olefin containing from 4 to 8 carbon atoms and 35 or more percent. of piperylene, and adding thereto a dissolved Friedel-Crafts polymerization catalyst. Modifiers such as butene-1, butene-2, trimethylethylene and diisobutylene may also be present in amounts from 5 to 40 per cent. by weight of the mixture. Isobutylene is the preferred olefin. Specified catalysts are aluminium chloride or bromide, boron trifluoride, titanium tetrafluoride and zirconium chloride in methyl or ethyl chloride, methylene or ethylene dichloride, chloroform, propyl chloride, and ethylidene fluoride. A diluent such as liquid ethane, propane, butane, hexane, heptane, difluorodichloromethane, fluoro-trichloromethane, tetrafluorodichloroethane, carbon disulphide and carbon dioxide may be used. The process may be by batch or continuous. An inhibitor, e.g. phenyl-b -naphthylamine or 2, 6-ditertiarybutyl-4-methyl phenol, may be added before purification while the copolymer may be compounded and vulcanized in the usual manner.
