Abstract
714,983. Hypodermic syringes. HUBER, R. L. Sept. 4, 1952, No. 22261/52. Class 81(2) A hypodermic syringe comprises a tubular barrel open at one end for the insertion of an ampoule and closed at the other end which mounts a hypodermic needle, the needle having a sharpened inner end which extends within the barrel, and a plunger comprising a tubular body which telescopically fits within the barrel to form an airtight joint and having a closing wall at its outer end from which extends a stem which projects within the tubular body and engages a movable stopper at one end of the ampoule as a means to move the ampoule for causing the piercing of a sealing stopper at the other end of the ampoule by the inner end of the needle- and to move the movable stopper to cause the ejection of medicament. The barrel 10 of the syringe contains an ampoule comprising a tube 35x fitted with a sealing stopper 36 at one end and a stopper 37 forming a piston at the other end. A hypodermic needle 15 mounted in oneend of the barrel 10 is sharpened at both ends, the inner end 18 penetrating the interior of the barrel 10. A kink 17 is provided in the needle where it passes through a hub 16 on the barrel 10 in order to prevent the needle shifting as pressure is. applied to it. The interior of the barrel 10 is narrower at the needle end for centering the ampoule. The plunger 12 is resilient and comprises a tubular member surrounding a stem 26 both parts being integral with a thumb piece 25. The inner end 29 of the plunger 12 is slightly flared to make an airtight joint with the interior of the barrel 10. Longitudinal ribs 45 are provided on the interior of the tubular member to frictionally grip the exterior of the ampoule as the plunger 12 is pushed in 'during use. When an injection is to be made, the needle 15 is inserted in the flesh and the plunger 12 is pulled outwardly slightly. If blood then appears at the inner end 18 of the needle 15, the latter is repositioned in the flesh. The plunger 12 is then pushed inwardly, the stem portion 26 abutting the piston-forming stopper 37 so that the sealing stopper 36 is pressed against the inner end of the needle 15 which then pierces it. Further pressure on the plunger 12 pushes the piston-forming stopper 37 within the ampoule and causes expulsion of medicament. The barrel 10 and plunger 12 are made of transparent plastic. The syringe which is disposable after use is supplied in a sterilized condition, a sealing jelly being provided where the plunger enters the barrel 10. The syringe is protected by either a container made of plastic or other material or by providing a sterile needle cap.
