Class 78 (4) A dismountable portal crane comprises a horizontal central main box-shaped girder and supporting columns also of box shape rigidly connectible to the main girder. The crane comprises a horizontal box beam 1 detachably supported by a pair of front box beams 2 and a rear box beam and mounted on detachable castors. The beam 1 is strengthened by two detachable box beams 12 and the supports are connected by detachable transverse and longitudinal rods 14 which may extend from the front to engage and centre the part to be hoisted. The beam 1 has a number of transverse braces, and has two longitudinal bars 17, 18, Fig. 4, for the wheels 19, 20 of a crab 21 having a pulley with a load hook 22. A draw bar 11 is provided for manoeuvring and is connected by a rod to the rear castor 9 for braking when stationary. The separate parts may be flanged at the ends and provided with detachable hinges such as S' to S<SP>6</SP> to aid dismantling, the hinges at S' being parallel to the axis of the box beam 1 and the hinges at S' being perpendicular thereto. The hoisting and traversing cables are connected to a winch 26 and the cables may be clamped together, under tension for transporting. One end of a cable is detachably connected to one end of the box beam 1. The cable end is provided with a conical member inserted into the core of the cable and welded to an outer end shield. The end is inserted through a slot in the beam and is held by a conical boss in two halves which detachably fit inside a further boss in the beam and hold the end secure.
