Class 46. {Also in Group VI] In a continuous ion exchange process liquid to be demineralized, e.g., water, liquid for regenerating solid exchange material, and washing liquid for the regenerated material each in a separate vessel serves to maintain the solid exchange material in suspension, the latter descending each vessel in succession and being returned to the head of the first vessel to restart the cyple. In operation water to be demineralized enters tangentially the base of an invertedconical vessel 2 and 'ascends with spiral motion in contraflow to solid cation exchange material 3 and the cation free water leaving at an outlet 4 is fed to. a tank 5. The spent exchange material is continuously discharged through an outlet 6 above the water inlet and passes to the head of a conical vessel 6' where it is regenerated by upwardly flowing brine supplied from a tank 7. The regenerated material leaves by an outlet 10 and is fed by a filter belt 11 beneath water sprays 13 to the head of a vessel 14 where it is washed by upwardly flowing cation free water from the tank 5 before being returned by a pump 19 and an injector 20 through a pipe 21 to the head of the vessel 2. The water in the tank 5 is freed from anions in a similar continuous flow apparatus comprising an exchange vessel 22, a regeneration vessel 26, and a washing vessel 33; the completely demineralized water being collected in a tank 24.
